Ostuni is culturally and geographically the first center of Salento; the most important economic activities are tourism and agriculture (especially olive trees and vines). The most peculiar feature of the historic center, which fascinates tourists so much, is the whitewashing of the houses up to the roofs.
The use, attested since the Middle Ages, derives not only from the easy availability of lime as a raw material, but from the need to ensure greater brightness in the alleys and narrow rooms of medieval plant, given by both direct and reflected light.
This means that Ostuni is called the White City or the Nativity City, and it is a feature that makes it recognizable and unforgettable to visitors.
